The scope of this standard deals with the safety of electric washing machines for household and similar use, that are intended for washing clothes and textiles. Appliances used by laymen in shops and other places with typical household applications are within the scope of this standard. This standard deals with the safety of the aforementioned electric washing machines. Where applicable, it deals with the general hazards arising from these washing machines to which all persons in the house and its surroundings are exposed. The rated voltage of the aforementioned appliances shall not exceed 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. This standard does not apply to: - washing machines intended exclusively for industrial use, to which ISO 10472-2 applies; - appliances intended for use in rooms where special conditions prevail, such as corrosive or explosive areas (dust, vapor, or gas); - washing machines with built-in steam-generating devices in which steam is generated at a pressure exceeding 50 kPa; - washing machines used in commercial environments, for example in laundromats, to which EN 50571 applies. Furthermore, this standard does not generally take into account: - children playing with the appliance; - use of the appliance by very young children; - use of the appliance by young children without supervision; - maintenance by children, including cleaning of the appliance. It should also be noted that very vulnerable persons may have needs that go beyond the level described in this standard. A typical example of use is the washing of clothes and textiles. The appliances are intended for use in households and for similar typical household applications, such as: - in staff kitchen areas of shops, offices, and other work environments; - on agricultural properties; - by guests in hotels, motels, and other similar residential environments; - in bed and breakfast establishments.
