Overview

This standard deals with the safety of electric vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances for household and similar purposes, including vacuum cleaners for animal grooming, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. It also applies to central vacuum systems and automatic battery-powered vacuum cleaners. This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such as electrical, mechanical, and thermal hazards, as well as fire and radiation hazards from electrical equipment that is operated properly in accordance with the instructions for use. It also covers unusual situations that are nevertheless likely to occur in practice and takes the manner in which electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of equipment into account. This standard does not apply to equipment intended exclusively for industrial use, nor to dust and water vacuum cleaners, including power-driven brushes for commercial use.
