Overview

This document specifies the nominal cross-sectional areas, in the range 0,5 mm<(hoch)2 to 3 500 mm<(hoch)2, for conductors in electric power cables and cords of a wide range of types. Requirements for numbers and sizes of wires and resistance values are also included. These conductors include solid, stranded and Milliken, copper, aluminium and aluminium alloy conductors in cables for fixed installations and flexible copper conductors. Conductors described in this document are specified in metric sizes. This document does not apply to conductors for telecommunication purposes. The standard differs from DIN EN 60228 (VDE 0295):2005-09 as follows: a) a description of segment conductors has been added; b) nominal cross-sections above 2 500 mm<(hoch)2 have been added; c) the old resistance value for 2 500 mm<(hoch)2 aluminum conductors has been corrected and a new value has been added. For legacy systems in which the 2 500 mm<(hoch)2 aluminum conductor was designed taking into account the value from previous editions, which is no longer listed in the current tables, the original design can be retained and continue to be used. In addition, suppliers may use the aforementioned old design of 2 500 mm<(hoch)2 aluminum conductors in already designed and qualified systems that have not yet been delivered or, for example, to manufacture additional lengths for repair and replacement for systems that have already been delivered. Whether the original, now replaced design of 2 500 mm<(hoch)2 aluminum conductors or a new one based on the new resistance values listed in the table is used shall be agreed between the supplier and the end users. This document is applicable to conductors in electric power cables and cords with nominal cross-sectional areas in the range 0,5 mm<(hoch)2 to 3 500 mm<(hoch)2 of a wide range of types. The applicability of this document to a particular type of cable is as specified in the standard for the type of cable.
