The standards in the DIN EN 60811 (VDE 0473-811) series specify the test methods to be used for testing non-metallic materials of all cable and wire types. Standards for the construction and materials of cables and wires refer to these test methods. The non-metallic materials used in cables and wires are typically used for insulating, sheathing, embedding, filling, or bandaging the interior of the cable. The test methods used for this purpose are recognized as elementary and fundamental. They have been developed and used over many years, mainly for materials in power cables and power lines. They are also recognized and used for other cables, in particular for optical fiber cables, communication cables, and control cables, including marine cables and cables for offshore applications. This part of IEC 60811 (VDE 0473-811) describes the methods for measuring the wall thicknesses of non-metallic cable sheaths that are applicable to the most common types of sheath compounds (cross-linked, PVC, PE, PP, etcetera). There are no restrictions in accordance with the scope of the document. The standard differs from DIN EN 60811-202 (VDE 0473-811-202):2018-05 as follows: a) 4.2, Measuring instruments, clearer statement that the wall thickness of cable sheaths shall be measured; b) 4.2, Measuring instruments, requirements for measuring the wall thickness of non-metallic cable sheaths applied over uniform surfaces added; c) the German version has been adapted to the current standard text in Annex ZA. Typical examples of application for the document are the methods for determining the wall thicknesses of non-metallic cable sheaths used in the most common types of sheath compounds (cross-linked, PVC, PE, PP, and so on).
This document replaces DIN EN 60811-202:2018-05; VDE 0473-811-202:2018-05 .
