Overview

This document specifies general requirements for design, testing and performance, and describes the test methods that apply to portable, transportable and fixed equipment for the measurement of the oxygen concentration in gas mixtures indicating up to 25 % (v/v). This document does not apply to external sampling systems, laboratory or scientific equipment, medical equipment or equipment used only for process measurement and control. For devices that detect multiple gases, this document applies exclusively to the measurement of oxygen. This document applies to devices intended for monitoring oxygen deficiency and oxygen excess. This document is applicable to devices intended for reliable measurement of oxygen concentration and that, when the measured value exceeds or falls below a pre-set alarm threshold, provide an indication, alarm or other output signal to warn of a potential hazard and, in some cases, trigger automatic or manual protective action. This document also applies to devices with an oxygen measurement function for explosion protection when monitoring inerting. This document is applicable to devices used for commercial, industrial, and professional safety applications, including the integrated sample systems of aspirated apparatus. This document is also applicable to devices that use optical measurement methods (such as TDLAS) in which the optical transmitter and receiver or the optical transmitter-receiver (that is, a combined transmitter and receiver) and a suitable reflector are not located in a common enclosure. In this case, however, it will be necessary to modify the test conditions described in 5.3 and to introduce additional tests in 5.4 of this document. Such additional tests will include alignment, disturbance when the beam is interrupted and long-range operation. Guidance on suitable modifications to the test conditions and additional tests can be found in EN 60079-29-4. It is expected that modifications to the test conditions and modified and additional tests will be agreed between the manufacturer and the testing laboratory and identified and described as such in the test report.
